Nike introduces new line of clubs for 2014

By on 6:40 PM
Nike VRS Covert 2.0 Driver
Nike Golf unveiled its full line of equipment and apparel for the upcoming 2014 season on Thursday. The line spans most club categories -- drivers, irons, fairway woods, hybrids, and wedges -- as well as golf balls, apparel and footwear.
The new VRS Covert 2.0 drivers have already been used on Tour, most notably by Rory McIlroy. The drivers feature a cavity back design with Nike's new "Fly-Brace" technology, resulting in increased energy transfer at impact for more ball speed and distance on mis-hits. In addition, Nike included redesigned NexCOR face technology engineered to be hotter than previous driver faces. The drivers also feature FlexLoft adjustability, allowing players to adjust the loft within a range of 8.5 degrees to 12.5 degrees and choose among three different face angles. The VRS Covert 2.0 drivers come in a standard model ($299) and a Tour model ($399) for better players.
Following up on last year's VRS Covert irons, Nike announced their new VRS Covert Forged irons. Like the new drivers, the irons feature the NexCOR faces, which Nike says produce faster ball speeds that result in added distance. The high-tech faces are paired with lower center of gravity thanks to a high-speed cavity-back design.
The VRS Covert 2.0 fairway woods also feature the high-speed cavity-back design, much like the irons and drivers, while the VRS Covert 2.0 hybrids use the company's new "Linear Transition Design," which allows for progressively smaller clubheads and increasing face heights.
Finally, Nike introduced their new VR X3X Toe Sweep wedges. Improving on their VR Forged wedges from 2013, the X3X wedges were designed with wider soles toward the toe and X3X groove technology, which Nike says create consistent shots with better ball flight and increased spin on the greens. All Nike's new clubs will hit retail shelves on Jan. 31, but the drivers are available for pre-order Jan. 9 on Nike.com.

First Look: Cobra Baffler XL hybrids

By on 6:38 PM

In 1975, Cobra burst onto the scene with a laminated maple utility club called the Baffler. It was a landmark club, a truly revolutionary design -- the great-grandfather of the hybrids that have become such a huge presence in our bags.
Four decades and countless models later, the newest Baffler, the XL, has the same ambition as the original: to make the game easier for everyday players. It has a flexible steel face to promote higher ball speeds. Cobra combines a shallow face with 20 grams of tungsten backweighting (30 percent more than the company's current Baffler T-Rail+ hybrid) to create a lower, deeper center of gravity so shots launch higher by 0.5 degrees, with less spin.
The Baffler XL is more forgiving than the T-Rail+ on mis-hits, too. Added stability (19 percent higher MOI) means less twisting at impact, which produces 1 to 2 mph faster ball speeds on off-center shots. According to Cobra, you can expect five or more extra yards from mis-hits.
The XL's prominent sole rails -- a feature dating back to the Ford Administration -- are designed with lots of "bounce" on the leading edge, so the head skids along the ground rather than digging in too deeply. The Baffler XL is nonadjustable, but comes in six lofts: 2H (17°), 3H (19°), 4H (22°), 5H (25°), 6H (28°) and 7H (31°). $159 each, graphite.

Callaway to release new X2 Hot line of clubs

By on 6:37 PM

On Tuesday, Callaway revealed its new X2 Hot line of golf clubs. The line spans multiple club categories, including drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons, with each available in a "Standard" or "Pro" version. With the X2 Hots, Callaway sets its focus squarely on distance.
"With the X2 Hot line, we challenged ourselves to reinvent each product to meaningfully improve distance, speed and forgiveness across every category," said Dr. Alan Hocknell, Senior Vice President, R&D, Callaway Golf. "We worked hard for every extra gram of discretionary weight, every thousandth of an inch of metal, to increase ball speed and overall distance while improving total performance, especially on off-center impact."
The X2 Hot drivers will feature the first instance of what Callaway has dubbed "Hyper Speed Face technology," which the company designed to improve ball speeds and increase distance. Adjustability has not been abandoned, as the drivers will feature eight different loft and lie angle settings. The "Standard" version of the X2 Hot driver is 460cc and available in 9°, 10.5° and 13.5°HT lofts, while the 440cc "Pro" is available comes with 8.5° loft and features a lower, more neutral center of gravity, in addition to an external 7-gram weight.
With a release date set for January 17, 2014, the suggested retail price for the drivers is $349.99, the fairway woods are $229.99, the hybrids are $199.99, and the irons are $799.99 with steel shafts ($899.99 for the Pro version).

First Look: TaylorMade's JetSpeed Line of Woods

By on 6:35 PM
Credit: Chad Matthew Carlson

The new JetSpeed line of woods (driver, fairway woods, hybrids) from TaylorMade will replace the existing RBZ Stage 2 woods in December. The JetSpeed ($299) is the first driver to feature TaylorMade's Speed Pocket technology, which is aimed at reducing spin and increasing speed and distance on shots struck low on the clubface. In addition a low, forward CG location produces significantly faster ballspeeds than RBZ and RBZ Stage 2 drivers on shots struck 1/2" high or low on the face. A twelve-position loft sleeve allows for full adjustability while a 46" lightweight shaft (49g) further contributes to increased clubhead speed and overall distance.
JetSpeed fairway woods ($229) also feature Speed Pocket technology to produce greater clubface flexibility and faster ballspeeds. Considered by TaylorMade reps to be "the longest, most playable fairway woods ever," JetSpeed fairways will be available in 15-, 17-, 19-, 21-, and 23-degree models but will not offer hosel adjustability.
JetSpeed hybrids ($199) feature many of the same design elements as the fairway woods and will be available in 16-, 19-, 22-, 25-, and 28-degree models.
The entire JetSpeed line of woods is currently being put through the paces at Golf Magazine's ClubTest, so be sure to check out the results beginning in the March '14 issue.

First Look: Callaway Apex Pro Irons

By on 6:33 PM
Credit: Schecter Lee

A better-player extension of the new Apex line, the Pro model is aimed at players who want the workability and control associated with blades while also enjoying the benefits of some forgiveness. Forged from carbon steel for enhanced feel, the Apex Pro features 7-gram tungsten weights in the sole of the 2- to 5-irons for higher launch. New, wider-spaced grooves allow for more control and consistent spin from a variety of lies. Lastly, the KBS Tour-V steel shaft (mid launch, low torque) is based on feedback from Phil Mickelson. The clubs will be at retail on January 17, 2014. Set of eight: $1,099, steel; $1,299, graphite.
